Mental Health for Schools
The Holmesdale School is delighted to be part of an exciting new Mental Health First Aid teacher training and pupil “Mind Fitness” programme. Tonbridge and Malling Borough Council is funding this new initiative which is being delivered by local, independent mental health charity, West Kent Mind (www.westkentmind.org.uk).
Sixteen (16) Holmesdale staff members have been trained in Youth Mental Health First Aid and all students in the process of being given a “Mind Fitness” workshop. The College is establishing a Mental Health Committee made up of teaching and support staff as well as students. It is envisaged that this Committee will implement initiatives that encourage openness about mental health and mental health problems and that students make use of the 16 trained members of staff and approach them if they are worried themselves or about somebody else. A culture of embracing the topic of mental health and working together to establish ongoing support networks for all students is the aim. Evidence suggests that incidents of mental health problems are on the increase amongst school age children, with 1 in 10 likely to experience a problem at some time during their school life. Holmesdale is passionate about this programme and extremely proud to be involved.
During the “Mind Fitness” workshop students were introduced to the 6 ways to wellbeing. Further information on these can be found at http://www.liveitwell.org.uk/ways-to-wellbeing/six-ways-to-wellbeing/
